Château Doisy-Védrines is a Second Growth estate in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, located in Barsac within the Sauternes appellation. Owned by the Castéja family since 1851, it produces botrytised sweet wines primarily from Sémillon, with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The wines are known for their richness, balance, and aging potential.
Château Doisy-Védrines, located in the commune of Barsac within Bordeaux’s Sauternes appellation, has a history dating back to the 17th century. Originally part of a larger estate known as Doisy, it was divided in the 19th century into three separate properties: Doisy-Védrines, Doisy-Daëne, and Doisy-Dubroca. The Védrines family, who owned the estate until 1846, lent their name to the château. In 1855, Château Doisy-Védrines was classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, recognising its quality and reputation.
In 1851, the estate was acquired by the Boireau family and later passed through the female line to the Castéja family, who continue to own and manage it today. Olivier Castéja currently oversees the château, maintaining its traditions while implementing modern viticultural practices. The estate's vineyards are situated on a clay-limestone plateau in Haut-Barsac, providing ideal conditions for producing sweet white wines.
Château Doisy-Védrines cultivates approximately 35 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Sémillon, along with smaller proportions of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Fermentation and aging occur in French oak barrels, with the wine typically maturing for 18 months before bottling. The estate produces both a grand vin and a second wine, offering expressions that reflect the unique terroir of Barsac.
