History

Château Cos d'Estournel, located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux was established in 1811 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The name "Cos" derives from the Gascon term for "hill of pebbles," reflecting the estate's gravelly terroir. D'Estournel was a pioneer in exporting wines directly to markets such as India, earning him the nickname "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe." His fascination with Eastern cultures influenced the château's distinctive architecture which features pagoda-style roofs and ornate elements.

Following d'Estournel's death in 1853 the estate changed ownership multiple times, including periods under English banker Charles Cecil Martyns and the Spanish Errazu family. In 1917 it was acquired by Bordeaux wine merchant Fernand Ginestet whose descendants managed the property for several decades. In 2000, entrepreneur Michel Reybier purchased the château, initiating significant investments in modernising the winemaking facilities while preserving its historical character.

Today Château Cos d'Estournel encompasses approximately 91 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate produces its grand vin, Château Cos d'Estournel, and a second wine, Les Pagodes de Cos. Under Reybier's ownership the château has embraced sustainable viticulture and innovative winemaking techniques, reinforcing its reputation as a leading producer in the Médoc region.
