Graciano is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Rioja region of northern Spain and is used as a blending grape in several well-known Spanish red wines, including Rioja and Navarra. It is known for producing tannic, deeply coloured red wines with good acidity and a range of fruit flavours.

Notable regions

Graciano grapes are mainly grown in the Rioja region of Spain and in Portugal's Alentejo region. In the former, Graciano is also often blended with Tempranillo and Garnacha to add depth and complexity to Rioja wines although it is gaining recognition as a single variety wine, with some winemakers focusing on producing high-quality, small batch wines from the grape.

The variety is also grown in small quantities in other wine regions such as Australia and California. It is also cultivated in small quantities in the Languedoc under the name Morrastel.

Characteristics

The classic Graciano wine has a medium to high acidity, is moderately tannic, full-bodied and deeply coloured.

Graciano wines are typically rich, intensely perfumed and have flavours of black cherry, plum, and spice.
