Gamay is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Beaujolais region of France, but is also grown in other wine regions, including Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. It is used to produce light-bodied, fruit-forward red wines that are known for their bright acidity, low tannins, and fresh, juicy fruit flavours.
The Gamay grape variety is most commonly associated with the Beaujolais region of France which produced 75% of the world's Gamay wine. However, it is also grown in Jura and the Loire Valley where it is used to produce lighter, fruit-forward red wines.
In Switzerland, Gamay is used to produce the wines of the Valais region and it is also notably grown in the Niagara Peninsula where it is used to produce a range of red wines, including sparkling and sweet wines.
Gamay is known for producing medium-bodied, fruity wines with low tannins and medium to high acidity.
These wines typically have flavours of red fruit, such as cherries, raspberries, and cranberries, with a characteristic spicy note.
