Cinsaut, also known as Cinsault in some regions, is a red wine grape variety originally from the Mediterranean region. It is known for its versatility and is used in making a wide range of wine styles, from light and fruity rosés to full-bodied and tannic red wines.
Cinsault is most popularly cultivated in France where it is widely grown in the Southern Rhône region. There it is often blended with other varieties, such as Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, to produce full-bodied and fruit-driven wines. It is also grown in the country's Languedoc-Roussillon region where it is used to produce fresh and easy-drinking wines.
The grape is also grown in other wine regions around the world, including California, Chile, South Africa, Lebanon and Australia.
Wines produced using Cinsaut are known for their medium- to light body and soft tannin profile. Dry wines, these tend to exhibit low tannins and medium levels of alcohol content.
The grape is characterized by its red fruit flavours, including raspberry, cherry, red currant and plum, as well as floral, black tea and spice notes.
