History

Gianfranco and Graziella Soldera founded Case Basse in the early 1970s after identifying an abandoned 23-hectare site near Montalcino. They planted Sangiovese vines in 1972–73, driven by a vision of crafting a “high‑quality natural wine” using hand-tended organic viticulture and minimal intervention during fermentation and aging.

From the mid-1970s, Case Basse produced limited quantities of Brunello di Montalcino, releasing its first in 1982 (from the 1977 vintage). Gianfranco’s approach, including spontaneous fermentation in Slavonian oak vats, no barriques and extended aging, established the winery as a model of traditional, terroir-driven Brunello.

After Gianfranco’s death in February 2019, his family continued the operation under his principles. Case Basse remains small-scale (typically 6,000–15,000 bottles per year), overseen with strong ecological commitment, including a two‑hectare botanical garden, and continued research into natural yeasts and vineyard ecosystems.
