History

Porto Ferreira, established in 1751 by the Ferreira family in Régua, Douro Valley, is one of Portugal's most historic Port wine producers. The company began as a family-run enterprise, cultivating vineyards and trading Port wines, and has remained under Portuguese ownership throughout its history. Over time, Ferreira expanded its vineyard holdings and became a prominent name in the Port wine industry.

A pivotal figure in the company's history is Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who assumed leadership in the mid-19th century after becoming a widow at 33. Known affectionately as "Ferreirinha," she was instrumental in modernising viticulture in the Douro region, expanding the company's estates, and implementing innovative winemaking techniques. Her commitment to quality and social welfare left a lasting legacy on both the company and the region.

Today, Porto Ferreira continues to produce a range of Port wines, including Tawny, Ruby, and Vintage styles, reflecting its rich heritage and dedication to quality. The company's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia house extensive aging facilities, and its vineyards, such as Quinta do Porto, contribute to the distinctive character of its wines. As part of the Sogrape group, Porto Ferreira upholds its tradition while embracing sustainable practices and innovation in winemaking.
