History
Niepoort is a historic Portuguese wine producer founded in 1842 by Eduard Kebe, later joined by his colleague Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort. Based in Vila Nova de Gaia, Niepoort built its reputation as a specialist in high-quality port wines, sourcing grapes from small growers in the Douro Valley.
Through successive generations, the Niepoort family maintained a strong focus on blending and ageing, with an emphasis on traditional methods. Dirk Niepoort, who joined the company in the 1980s, expanded its vision by introducing unfortified Douro wines alongside its classic port offerings, helping to elevate the region’s profile internationally.
Today, Niepoort is recognised for both its innovative approach and respect for tradition. The winery produces a diverse range of ports and table wines, combining sustainable viticulture, low-intervention winemaking, and experimentation while continuing to champion the unique characteristics of the Douro Valley.
