Tannat is a red wine grape variety that is indigenous to the South West France region. It is now widely grown in South America, particularly in Uruguay, where it is known for producing full-bodied and tannic red wines with high alcohol content.

Notable regions

Tannat is primarily grown in the South West France in the Madiran and Jurançon areas, as well as other appellations such as Irouléguy, Tursan and Béarn where it is blended with Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon.

It is also grown in several other wine regions around the world, particularly Uruguay where it is one of the country's most important grape varieties. Uruguayan cultivation accounts for more of the Tannat under vine than any other country in the world. Of those, plantings can be found in Argentina, the United States, Brazil and Italy.

Characteristics

Tannat wines tend to be full-bodied, tannic and flavourful. The variety has a rich aroma profile, often showcasing dark fruit flavours such as blackberry, black cherry and plum, along with notes of spice and sometimes a touch of oak. The tannins in Tannat wines are known to be firm and bold, contributing to the wine's overall structure and longevity.

Wines made from Tannat grapes are often high in alcohol, with a deep colour and full body. The flavours in Tannat wines can vary greatly depending on growing conditions and winemaking techniques, but they are generally known for their rich and robust character.
