Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is a historic family-owned estate in the Ruwer Valley, Mosel, Germany. Managed by the von Schubert family since 1882, it specialises in Riesling from its three monopole vineyards—Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg—each classified as VDP.Grosse Lage. The estate emphasises spontaneous fermentation and sustainable viticulture, producing wines renowned for their purity, minerality, and aging potential.
Weingut Maximin Grünhaus, located in the Ruwer Valley near Trier, Germany, boasts a viticultural history dating back to Roman times. The estate's documented origins begin in 966 AD when Emperor Otto I confirmed its donation to the Benedictine monastery of Saint Maximin in Trier. The monks cultivated the vineyards for centuries, establishing a legacy of winemaking that laid the foundation for the estate's enduring reputation.
In 1882, the estate transitioned to private ownership when Carl Ferdinand Freiherr von Stumm-Halberg acquired it. Through his daughter Ida's marriage to Conrad von Schubert, the property entered the von Schubert family, who have maintained stewardship ever since. Under their guidance, Maximin Grünhaus has preserved its historical significance while adapting to modern viticultural practices.
Today, the estate is managed by the sixth generation, Maximin von Schubert, who continues the family's commitment to quality and tradition. The vineyards, comprising the renowned Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg sites, are cultivated primarily with Riesling, reflecting the unique terroir of the region. Maximin Grünhaus remains a testament to centuries of winemaking heritage in the Mosel region.
