Established in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, this winery has a rich history of producing world-class Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as other varietals. Penfolds is known for its innovative winemaking techniques, including the creation of the renowned Penfolds Grange, which is considered one of Australia's finest wines.
Penfolds Wines was founded in 1844 in South Australia by Christopher and Mary Penfold as a modest family business focused on producing wines for local consumption. The early operations laid the foundation for a long tradition of winemaking in Australia, with the winery gradually establishing its reputation in the region.
In the mid-20th century, significant changes took place when winemaker Max Schubert joined the team. Under his guidance, Penfolds shifted its focus to producing high-quality wines, which led to the development of the now-iconic Penfolds Grange. This period marked a transition from a regional producer to a brand known for excellence on both the national and international stages.
Today, Penfolds Wines is recognised as one of Australia’s leading wine producers, offering a diverse range of wines that reflect the country’s varied terroirs. The winery continues to combine traditional winemaking methods with modern techniques, ensuring that its products meet high standards and maintain the legacy of quality that has defined the brand for over a century.
