Bruno Giacosa was an esteemed producer in Piedmont’s Langhe, crafting legendary Barolo and Barbaresco wines from 1961 until his death in 2018. Guided by traditional methods and strict fruit selection, his estate spans 20 ha and remains family-run under daughter Bruna.
Bruno Giacosa (1929–2018), from Neive in Piemonte, began working in his family’s négociant business around age 15, blending wines from purchased Nebbiolo grapes to create Barbaresco and Barolo. In the 1960s, he emerged as one of three leading Barbaresco producers alongside Gaja and Produttori del Barbaresco. Notably, he pioneered single‑vineyard bottlings, releasing the region’s first cru‑designated Barbaresco Santo Stefano in 1964 and later Barolo from Falletto.
Throughout his career, Giacosa earned a reputation for traditional methods and exacting standards. He favored long macerations (up to 30–50 days), large French oak botti, and would refrain from bottling any vintage he deemed sub‑standard, selling it off in bulk. His wines - especially vineyard‑specific Riserva bottlings in distinctive “red label” - are regarded as benchmarks of quality in Piedmont.
From the 1980s onward, Giacosa acquired estate vineyards including Falletto in Serralunga and Asili and Rabajà in Barbaresco, enabling greater estate bottling under Azienda Agricola Falletto while maintaining broader production under Casa Vinicola Bruno Giacosa . After his stroke in 2006, his daughter Bruna took on increasing responsibility. Upon his death in 2018, she continued the estate’s tradition, preserving Giacosa’s heritage of terroir‑driven, meticulously crafted Barolo, Barbaresco, and other Piedmont varietals.
