Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety that is indigenous to Austria and is widely grown in the country's wine regions, particularly in the Niederösterreich and Burgenland regions. It is a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grape varieties, and is known for producing fruity and medium-bodied red wines with good acidity.
Zweigelt is grown primarily in Austria and the grape is widely associated with the country where it is used to produce some of the country's most iconic red wines. Zweigelt is a relatively new grape variety, having been developed in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, however it is the most widely-planted red wine grape in the country. The wines from Burgenland and particularly the Neusiedlersee are of particular note.
Zweigelt is also grown in regions of the Czech Republic, Germany and Italy.
Zweigelt wines are known for their bright and fruit-forward aroma profile, with notes of red berries, cherries, and spices such as black pepper and cloves. On the palate, Zweigelt wines are medium-bodied, with a good balance of acidity and tannins, and flavours of red fruits, spices, and a hint of earthiness.
The wine is known for its good aging potential, with the ability to develop secondary flavours and aromas over time. Zweigelt is often described as having a fresh and lively character, with a bright acidity and juicy, fruity flavour profile.
