Trousseau, also known as Bastardo in Portugal, is a red wine grape variety that is indigenous to the Jura region of France. It is known for producing deeply coloured, tannic and full-bodied red wines with flavours of dark fruit, and is one of the region's traditional grape varieties.
Trousseau grapes are primarily grown in the Jura region of France, but are also cultivated in smaller quantities in other regions of the country, including the Loire Valley. In the Jura, Trousseau is used to produce a range of wine styles, including the region's signature vin jaune and red wines that are often blended with other grapes.
The grape is also grown in Spain where it is known as Merenzao and Verdejo Negro, and Portugal where they call it Bastardo. Small plantings of the grape can also be found in the United States, Argentina and Australia.
Trousseau grapes are known for producing full-bodied, tannic wines with a high acidity. The grapes are often compared to Pinot Noir for their light colour and delicate flavour profile. The wine made from Trousseau grapes is considered a niche product, but is gaining popularity among wine lovers for its unique, earthy, and spicy characteristics.
