Petit Rouge is a red Italian wine grape variety that is believed is indigenous to the Valle d'Aosta. Somewhat obscure, the grape is not cultivated in great numbers anywhere else, and is used for both blending and occasional production of varietal wines in its native region.
Petit Rouge is the most prolific variety of the Valle d'Aosta region and is a component in the blends of a number of its DOCs alongside Gamay, Pinot Noir and Fumin. Among these wines are the Petit Rouge-heavy Enfer d’Arvier, Torrette and Chambave.
Outside of Italy, only the United States has any Petit Rouge under vine, and in small quantities.
The grape tends to give wines a ruby red to garnet colour with intense scent. They are usually fairly tannic in the mouth, soft and velvety, full-bodied and usually quite alcoholic.
