Koshu is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan and is used to produce a variety of white wine styles, including still and sparkling wines. Highly distinctive, the grape has a deep-pink colour that is reminiscent of Japan's famous cherry blossom.
Koshu is primarily cultivated in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan where the region's climate, with cool nights and warm days - and its sandy soils - are ideal for growing high-quality grapes. The grape has long associations to Japan where it is believed to have grown for over one thousand years.
Yamanashi accounts for around 95% of the Koshu plantings in Japan.
Koshu wines are known for having light body, moderate alcohol content and are high in acidity.
The wines can exhibit a range of fruit flavours, including citrus and stone fruit, and is prized for its unique profile and delicate aromatics.
