Greco is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in southern Italy, particularly in the Campania region. It is used to produce a variety of white wine styles, including still, sparkling, and sweet wines, and is known for its crisp acidity and a range of fruit flavours.

Notable regions

Although originating in Greece, Greco grapes are Today mostly used to make wine in several notable Italian wine regions. In Campania, Greco is most heavily grown in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Napoli and Salerno. There are also plantings in Lazio, Tuscany and even in Liguria in the north.

Outside of Italy, there is some small Greco cultivation in Australia and Portugal too.

Characteristics

The grape is known for producing medium to full-bodied wines that have high acidity and a noticeable minerality.

Greco wines tend to have flavours and aromas of green apple, pear, occasional stone fruits such as peach and sometimes honey. With ageing the wines can often acquire some herbal qualities.
