Grechetto is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in central Italy, particularly in the Umbria and Lazio regions. It is used to produce a variety of white wine styles, including still, sparkling, and sweet wines, and is known for its crisp acidity and a range of fruit flavours.

Notable regions

The most well-known wine produced using Grechetto grapes is Orvieto, a DOC wine that is made in the Umbrian region. The vineyards of Orvieto are planted on the hills around the town of the same name, which provides the grapes with the optimal growing conditions. Some producers in Umbria also make a sparkling version of Grechetto wine which is known for its delicate bubbles and refreshing flavour profile.

The grape is also extensively grown in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio

Characteristics

The wines made from Grechetto grapes tend to be bone-dry with medium to light body and a lively acidity.

Grechetto features an herbal, slightly nutty bouquet with primary flavours that can include peach, honeydew melon and strawberry.
