Croatina is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy and is used to produce several red wine styles, including the robust, tannic red wines of the Colline Novaresi DOC. It is known for producing full-bodied red wines with high tannins, good acidity, and a range of fruit flavours.

Notable regions

Croatina is most commonly cultivated in the Piedmonte region of Italy. There it can be found in the provinces of Biella, Novara, and Vercelli, where it is grown on hillside vineyards and blended with other local varieties to produce a range of wines.

Croatina is also grown in other regions of Italy, such as Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna.

Characteristics

Croatina is considered a highly adaptable grape variety and is capable of producing wine in a range of styles, from light and fruity to rich and full-bodied. Generally, its wines are known for their high acidity and tannin levels.

The grape produces wines with flavours of red and black fruit, such as cherries, raspberries, and blackberries which, due to its acidity, are suited to ageing where they develop to become deeper and more complex over time.
