Notable regions

Although of French origin, the Douce Noir grape is far more widely cultivated in the new world today, particularly in California and Argentina. In the latter, the majority of the grape under vine is in Mendoza with other plantings in the  La Rioja, San Juan, and Catamarca provinces.

In California the grape has long associations to the Napa Valley and is particularly used by producers such as Inglenook and Paducci.

Characteristics

Wines produced using Charbono grapes are highly fruity and tend to be medium-bodied, low in tannin and high in acidity.

The flavour profile has classic notes of black cherry, blueberry, and plum, with floral and spice that can be joined by chocolate and tobacco notes if oaked.
