Catarratto is a white grape variety that is widely grown in Sicily, Italy and is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. It is typically used for the production of light, crisp and fresh white wines, often blended with other grape varieties, and can also be used to make Marsala wine.
Catarratto is grown in several wine regions throughout Sicily and owes much of its profusion there to its use in Marsala wine production. It is commonly found round the island's west coast in Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento and Marsala itself.
The grape is also grown in smaller amounts in other regions of Italy, such as Calabria and Campania, where it is used to produce crisp and floral white wines.
The Catarratto grape tends to produce dry wines that have medium to light body and medium acidity.
The grape is known for its fresh, floral, and citrusy profile and produces wines with flavours of lemon, green apple and pear, peach, honey and an occasional hint of minerality.
