Brachetto is a red grape variety that is primarily grown in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is known for producing sweet, fruity, and slightly sparkling wines although rare examples of its historic use in dry table wines are also produced.

Notable regions

The Brachetto grape is almost exclusively cultivated in the Piedmont region of Italy where it is used to produce the sweet and sparkling wine known as Brachetto d'Acqui, the production of which is limited and is considered to be one of Italy's most unique and traditional wine styles.

The grape is also grown in small amounts in other regions such as Roero where it is known as Birbet, and in California in the US where it is used to produce sweet red wines.

Characteristics

Brachetto wines are known for being highly sweet with medium to light body and medium levels of tannins. They are also typically low in alcohol.

The grape produces wines that are sweet, with berry notes of raspberries, strawberries and blackcurrant. Other flavours include apricot, orange zest and rose petals.
