Welschriesling is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to Austria and is widely grown in the country's wine regions, particularly in the Niederösterreich and Burgenland regions. It is known for producing light-bodied, crisp and fresh white wines with good acidity, and is considered a signature grape of the Austrian wine industry.
Welschriesling is widely associated with Austria, where it is used to produce some of the country's most iconic white wines. Of particular note are the Trockenbeerenauslese wines of Neusiedlersee in south-east Austria.
The majority of the Welschriesling under vine is in eastern Europe, and in addition to Austria it can be found cultivated in Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia and Slovakia.
Welschriesling wines are known for their fresh and crisp aroma profile, with notes of green apples, lemon zest, and white flowers. The wine is also characterized by its minerality, with hints of chalk and wet stone.
On the palate, Welschriesling wines are light-bodied, with a bright acidity and flavours of green fruits, lemon, and a slight bitterness. The wine is known for its good balance between sweetness and acidity, with a crisp, refreshing finish.
