Teroldego is a red wine grape variety that is indigenous to the Trentino-Alto Adige wine region of north-eastern Italy. It is known for producing full-bodied, deeply coloured red wines with high tannins and complex flavours, and is considered one of the flagship grape varieties of the region.

Notable regions

Teroldego is grown in several regions in Italy, including Veneto, Lombardy and Piedmont, but it is in Trentino-Alto Adige where it has found its true home. There it has been grown for hundreds of years as it is a versatile grape variety that is well-suited to the cooler, Alpine climate of the region. As a varietal wine the region has just a single DOC, the Teroldego Rotaliano.

Teroldego is a relatively obscure variety that is not widely known outside of Italy, but there are small plantings in Australia, California and Brazil.

Characteristics

The Teroldego grape produces bold, full-bodied wines with high levels of tannins and a distinctive flavour profile. The variety is known for its rich fruit flavours which can range from ripe blackberries and cherries to more exotic fruit notes like blackcurrants and black plums. In addition, Teroldego wines often have noticeable spice notes, with hints of black pepper and sometimes clove or nutmeg.

Teroldego wines are often full-bodied and high in alcohol, with a smooth and sometimes chewy texture that contributes to their appeal. They are known for their long ageing potential and can develop complex secondary aromas and flavours over time, such as leather, tobacco, and earthy notes.
