Pinot Meunier is a red wine grape variety that is grown in the Champagne region of France, where it is used primarily in the production of sparkling wines. It is known for producing wines with a fruity, fresh character, and is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, to add fruitiness and a lighter body to sparkling wine blends.
Pinot Meunier is most commonly associated with the Champagne region of France. The grape is one of the three primary grape varieties used in Champagne production, along with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Outside of the Champagne, the grape is also cultivated in the Loire Valley as well as Moselle.
The grape is also grown in Germany under its synonyms Schwarzriesling, Müllerrebe and Müller-Traube, and has associations to the Carneros AVA in California and Grampians sub-region of Australia's Victoria.
Pinot Meunier grapes tend to produce wine with a fruity character and soft, supple tannins. They have flavours of red and dark berry fruits, such as cherries, raspberries, and blackberries, as well as hints of spice and earthiness.
These wines are often described as being medium-bodied and balanced, with a juicy, fruit-forward character. In terms of aroma, Pinot Meunier wines are often characterized by floral and fruit scents, with notes of black cherry, raspberry, and spice being particularly prominent.
