Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a red wine grape variety that is grown in California and other wine regions around the world. It is a cross between the varieties Syrah and Peloursin, and is known for producing full-bodied, tannic wines with intense dark fruit flavors and a robust, spicy character.

Notable regions

Petite Sirah is a rare grape variety and despite being of French origin, is primarily grown in California in the United States. Among the sub-regions where the grape is cultivated include Lodi, Paso Robles, Napa Valley, Sonoma and Mendocino.

The grape is also found in smaller quantities in other wine regions such as Australia, South Africa and Chile.

Characteristics

Petite Sirah grapes tend to produce full-bodied, tannic red wines with intense flavours and aromas. The wine is noted for its rich, dark fruit notes of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry, along with hints of spices such as black pepper and liquorice.

Petite Sirah wine is also known for its firm, structured tannins that give the wine a bold and robust character. The wine can display complex aromas of dark chocolate, leather, and smoke, and has a reputation for ageing well, developing even more complexity and depth with time in the bottle.
