Nero d'Avola is a red wine grape variety that is indigenous to Sicily, Italy. It is one of the most widely grown grape varieties in Sicily and is known for producing full-bodied wines with high tannins and bold, fruit-forward flavours.
Nero d'Avola is one of Italy's most important red grape varieties and is widely recognized for its contribution to the country's winemaking heritage. Most commonly found in Sicily, the grape is named after the eponymous town on the island's south-east coast.
Nero d'Avola is also grown in other regions in Italy, as well as Australia, California, and South Africa.
In wine, the Nero d'Avola grape is known for providing deep colour, medium to full body and high tannin content. They also produce medium to high acidity with similar levels of alcohol.
The flavours and aromas tend to exhibit notes of dark fruit such as black cherry, blackberry and plum. The wine can also have a spicy, earthy character with hints of chocolate, coffee, and tobacco.
