Nerello Mascalese is a red wine grape variety that is grown on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. It is known for producing light to medium-bodied wines with high acidity and moderate tannins, often described as having complex and delicate flavours.
Nerello Mascalese is primarily grown in the north-eastern region of Sicily, Italy. The vineyards that grow Nerello Mascalese are often located on the slopes of Mount Etna and the variety is considered one of the most important and distinctive grape varieties in the region, particularly in the area of the Etna DOC.
Nerello Mascalese is also grown in small quantities in the Calabria region where it is permitted in the the DOCs of Lamezia, Sant'Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto, and Savuto.
Nerello Mescalese is known for producing elegant and nuanced wines with medium-bodied structure. The grape typically exhibits aromas of red fruit, such as cherries and raspberries, as well as hints of florals and spices.
On the palate, Nerello Mascalese wines are known for their high acidity, medium tannins, and delicate balance of fruit and minerality.
