Malagousia is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to Greece. It was nearly extinct in the 1970s, but has since been revived and is now grown primarily in Greece, Bulgaria and other parts of the Balkans.

Notable regions

In Greece, the Malagousia grape is particularly well-known in the region of Macedonia where it is used to produce bright and aromatic white wines. The grape can also be found in Central Greece and of particular note is the Halkidiki peninsula on the north-eastern coast where the grape was rescued from extinction by Evangelos Gerovassiliou after he planted it there in 1983.

Characteristics

Malagousia is known for producing bright, crisp and aromatic white wines. On the nose, these have a distinct aroma profile featuring notes of fresh citrus fruit, such as lemon and lime, as well as floral notes of jasmine and rose.

On the palate, Malagousia wines are characterised by their balanced acidity and subtle sweetness, resulting in a bright, crisp and refreshing wine with a lively mouthfeel. These wines are also known for their distinctive flavour profile, which can range from ripe stone fruit such as peaches and apricots to tropical fruit flavours such as passion fruit and mango.
