Magliocco is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Calabria region of southern Italy. It is used to produce a variety of red wine styles, ranging from light and fruity to full-bodied and robust, and is prized for its rich tannins, bright acidity, and a range of fruit and spice flavours.
Magliocco grapes are almost exclusively grown in Calabria in southern Italy. The majority of Calabrian plantings in the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone, and the grape features heavily in the blends of DOC wines of Terre di Cosenza Colline del Crati, Esaro and Donnici.
Magliocco grapes are known for producing red wines with a medium-bodied structure. These wines are characterized by their unique and complex aroma profile, featuring notes of black fruit such as black cherry and blackberry, as well as hints of spice, leather and tobacco.
On the palate, Magliocco wines offer a balanced blend of juicy fruit and firm tannins, with flavours that can range from ripe red fruit to earthy and spicy notes.
