Glera is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy and is the primary grape variety used to produce the sparkling wine Prosecco. It is known for producing light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing sparkling wines with good acidity and a range of fruit flavours.
Formerly known as the Prosecco grape, it is unsurprising that the majority of Glera cultivation continues to take place in the Italian regions where the famous sparkling wine is produced. The DOCG production area of Prosecco spans nine provinces in Veneto and one in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The Glera grape is also grown in the Lombardy region of Italy and in Slovenia and Australia.
Glera produces wines that are light-bodied with low alcohol and a good amount of acidity.
Some of the most common notes in Glera wines are white peach, pear, lemon, apple, and white flowers.
