Gaglioppo is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Calabria region of southern Italy and is one of the most important grape varieties in the region. It is used to produce a variety of red wine styles, including still, sparkling, and fortified wines.

Notable regions

Gaglioppo is exclusively cultivated in Italy where it is best-known for producing the red wines of the Ciro DOC in Calabria. The region is also home to a number of indigenous grape varieties that are blended with Gaglioppo to produce unique and complex wines.

In addition to Calabria, the Gaglioppo grape is also grown in the regions of Abruzzo, Marche and Umbria.

Characteristics

The Gaglioppo grape is known for producing bone-dry wines that are medium-bodied with medium to high tannins and medium acidity.

Its wines are often described as having flavours and aromas of raspberries, cherries and red currants, as well as spices, leather, tobacco and black pepper.
