Chambourcin is a red wine grape variety that is widely grown in the eastern United States, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic states. The grape is part of a rare group known as teinturier, meaning it has red flesh as well as skin, giving its wines a particularly deep colour.
Chambourcin is well-suited to the warm and humid climates of the eastern United States where it is prized for its adaptability and resistance to disease. It is particularly well-cultivated in the states of Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio, and also grown in smaller amounts in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.
Other Chambourcin-growing countries include New Zealand and Australia, with small amounts of cultivation also taking place in Canada and Switzerland.
Chambourcin is known for producing wines with medium body, and a smooth and fruity profile.
In general, Chambourcin exhibits dark colours with intense spicy aromas. Spice is also replicated in its flavours, which also include notes of cherries and plums and some noticeable herbal traits as well.
